A festival for discovering the traditional craftsmanship and performing arts from the Tohoku Region!
The Rekimin Autumn Festival is an annual two-day event originally created in 2006 to share the intangible art and folk cultural assets of the Tohoku Region —notably its traditional performing arts and skilled craftsmanship!
Every year, the festival features traditional performing arts, registered as Intangible Folk Cultural Assets, from Sendai and the Tohoku Region. These include the Osawa Taue Odori (大沢の田植踊 "Rice Planting Dance" from Osawa, Izumi Ward), Shika Odori (鹿踊剣舞 Deer Dance), Kenbu Sword Dance (剣舞), and Sendai Kagura (仙台の神楽 unfortunately not held this year). In addition to these performances, craftspeople will also show off their skills and demonstrate how they create traditional Sendai crafts. This year's featured crafts are the elegant Sendai Tansu, Tohoku's beloved Kokeshi, and the iconic Matsukawa Daruma. Finally, the event also incorporates modern theater, street performances, and games such as Modern Kamishibai (a form of Japanese street theater and storytelling popular during the 1930's and until the advent of television), juggling, Koma Mawashi (独楽まわし Japanese spin-top game), and many other contemporary performances.
Don't miss the opportunity to experience Sendai's history, traditions, and spectacular fusion of traditional and modern performing arts at the Rekimin Autumn Festival held at the Tsutsuyaoka Park and the Sendai Museum of History and Folklore!
