The must visit summer festival in Matsushima with lantern floats and a centuries old procession!
The beloved Uminobon Festival in Matsushima is finally back this summer! In an effort to preserve the local culture and traditions following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, this festival is filled with bon dancing, taiko drum performances, and floating paper lanterns that glisten in the Matsushima Bay. Enjoy the many food stands and vendors set up in the En Nichi Plaza as well as a small 20-minute firework show held on both days. The final evening features a centuries-old procession, complete with the hypnotizing chanting of sturas by Buddhist priests.
Don't miss out on experiencing Japanese summer in Matsushima!
